DXB Terminal Transfer Times | What to Allow Between Flights

Last updated: July 14, 2026

DXB terminal transfer times range from a few minutes inside Terminal 3 to a 30–40 minute shuttle ride if Terminal 2 is involved. This guide sets out exactly how long each connection takes at Dubai International, which terminals are linked airside, and the minimum connection time to allow — so a tight layover does not catch you out.

Quick answer

A connection within Terminal 3 (Emirates) is the quickest — a few minutes between Concourses B and C, or a short automated-train ride to Concourse A. Terminal 1 and Terminal 3 are linked airside, a 15–20 minute walk and train. Terminal 2 is the catch: it sits separately across the airfield with no airside link, so a transfer means a 30–40 minute shuttle and you should allow at least four hours. As a rule, give yourself 75–90 minutes minimum for an international connection at DXB, and more if you change terminals or are on separate tickets.

How DXB’s terminals are laid out

Dubai International has three terminals. Terminal 3 is the Emirates home base, with Concourses A, B and C — B and C are within walking distance of each other, while Concourse A (the A380 concourse) is reached by a short underground automated train. Terminal 1 handles most other international airlines through Concourse D, and is connected to Terminal 3 airside. Terminal 2 sits on the opposite, northern side of the airfield, is used by flydubai and some regional carriers, and has no airside connection to the other two.

Connections within Terminal 3 and to Terminal 1

If both flights are in Terminal 3, the transfer behaves like a normal hub: walk between Concourses B and C in minutes, or take the automated train to Concourse A and allow around 15–30 minutes including the walk to a far gate. A move between Terminal 1’s Concourse D and Terminal 3 is also airside, using a walkway and train, and typically takes 15–20 minutes. On a single Emirates or partner ticket your bags are checked through and the airline manages the transfer, so 75–90 minutes is usually enough.

Transfers involving Terminal 2

Terminal 2 is where connections get harder. Because it has no airside link to Terminals 1 and 3, you move by free shuttle bus, a ride of roughly 30–40 minutes once you factor in waiting and boarding. flydubai, which operates from both Terminal 2 and Terminal 3, runs frequent connection shuttles for its through-passengers; the general airport shuttle runs less often. Either way, Dubai Airports advises allowing at least four hours between Terminal 2 and the other terminals. Follow the “Connections” signs, and only collect baggage if your ticketing requires it.

Minimum connection time at DXB

Dubai International recommends a minimum of about 75–90 minutes for international connections to clear transfer security and reach the gate. Emirates will sell connections from around 60 minutes within Terminal 3, but 90 minutes or more is far safer once you account for the train, distant gates and busy peak banks. Add time for a Concourse A gate, a Terminal 1 move, or any chance of a delay on the inbound flight. If your connection drops below the minimum, treat it as a risk, not a plan — use the Layover Calculator to check whether your buffer is safe.

Separate tickets change everything

All of the above assumes a single through-ticket where the airline protects your transfer. If your flights are on separate tickets, you must clear immigration, collect your bags, re-check-in and re-clear security — adding one to two hours and turning even a same-terminal connection into a self-transfer. For that scenario, plan generously and read our DXB self-transfer guide before you book.

Methodology

TripBuffer looks at DXB terminal transfer time through the real path a traveler walks: concourse layout, the automated train, the Terminal 2 shuttle, baggage handling and whether the ticketing structure preserves the airport’s transfer advantage. Times and connection guidance are taken from Dubai Airports and Emirates sources (linked below) and checked against current 2026 service.

FAQs

How long does it take to transfer between terminals at DXB?

Within Terminal 3 it is a few minutes to 30 by train; Terminal 1 to Terminal 3 is about 15–20 minutes airside; and Terminal 2 to the other terminals is a 30–40 minute shuttle with no airside link.

What is the minimum connection time at Dubai Airport?

About 75–90 minutes for an international connection on a single ticket. Allow 90 minutes or more for a Concourse A gate or a Terminal 1 move, and at least 3–4 hours if Terminal 2 is involved.

How do I get from Terminal 2 to Terminal 3 at DXB?

By free shuttle bus, since Terminal 2 has no airside link. Follow the “Connections” signs; the ride is roughly 30–40 minutes with waiting, so allow at least four hours for the overall connection.

Are Terminal 1 and Terminal 3 connected?

Yes, airside. You move between Terminal 1’s Concourse D and Terminal 3 by walkway and a short train, typically in 15–20 minutes, without leaving the transfer area on a single ticket.

Does a separate-ticket connection need more time?

Yes. On separate tickets you clear immigration, collect bags, re-check-in and re-screen, adding 1–2 hours and turning the connection into a self-transfer.
