JFK Terminal Transfer Times | What to Allow Between Flights

Last updated: July 14, 2026

This guide sets out how long it really takes to move between terminals at New York JFK, why every terminal change means clearing security again, and the minimum connection time to allow — so a tight layover does not catch you out.

Quick answer

  • JFK has five working terminals — Terminals 1, 4, 5, 7 and 8 — and there is no airside (secure) link between any of them.
  • To change terminals you leave security, ride the free AirTrain JFK, and clear TSA screening again at the next terminal.
  • A same-terminal connection can work on 45–60 minutes; a terminal change on one ticket realistically needs 90 minutes or more.
  • On separate tickets, or arriving internationally, treat a terminal change as a self-transfer of 3–4 hours or longer.

How JFK’s terminals are connected

AirTrain JFK links every terminal and runs 24 hours a day, with trains every few minutes. Inside the airport loop it is free, and the ride between terminals itself only takes a few minutes. That is why JFK connections look easy on paper.

The catch is that JFK has no secure connector between terminals. Unlike a single-building airport, you cannot walk airside from Terminal 4 to Terminal 5. Every terminal change means leaving the secure area, taking AirTrain, and clearing TSA security again — and that security queue, not the train, is what eats your time.

Airlines are grouped by terminal: Delta is mainly in Terminal 4, JetBlue in Terminal 5, American in Terminal 8, and a mix of international carriers use Terminals 1 and 7. If both your flights are with the same airline or alliance in one terminal, you often avoid the AirTrain step entirely.

Minimum connection time at JFK

On a single, through-checked ticket the airline sets the official minimum connection time and takes responsibility if a tight connection fails. For a same-terminal move that can be under an hour; for a terminal change, allow 90 minutes or more so you can absorb the AirTrain ride, the walk, and a second security screening at a busy time of day.

If your flights are on separate tickets, none of that protection applies. You must reclaim your bags, move terminals, check in again (bag drop usually closes about 60 minutes before departure) and re-clear security. That is a self-transfer, and 3–4 hours is a sensible floor — more if you are arriving on an international flight and clearing CBP immigration first.

Worked example

JetBlue (T5) to a separate American ticket (T8): your inbound lands at 2:00pm. Bags reach the belt around 2:30pm, you walk out and catch AirTrain to Terminal 8 (arriving airside-landside by about 2:50pm), then join the check-in and bag-drop queue, and finally the TSA line. By the time you reach the gate it is comfortably past 4:00pm — so a 3:30pm departure was never realistic, but a 6:00pm one gives you room.

FAQs

Can you transfer between JFK terminals without going through security again?

No. JFK has no airside connection between terminals, so any terminal change means leaving the secure area, taking AirTrain, and clearing TSA security again at the new terminal.

How long does AirTrain take between JFK terminals?

The ride itself is only a few minutes and trains run every few minutes, 24 hours a day. The time cost is the walking, exiting, and re-screening around it — allow 90 minutes or more for a terminal-change connection.

Is AirTrain free between JFK terminals?

Yes. Travelling between terminals inside the airport is free. AirTrain only charges when you ride out to the Jamaica or Howard Beach subway and rail stations.

How much time should I allow to change terminals at JFK on separate tickets?

Treat it as a self-transfer and allow at least 3–4 hours, because you must reclaim bags, ride AirTrain, check in again and pass security. Add more if you are arriving internationally and clearing immigration first.
