Dubai (DXB) is one of the world’s smoothest transit hubs, so a short layover can work — if it is a through connection on one ticket. An Emirates connection within Terminal 3 can go on 60 to 75 minutes; moving between Terminals 1 and 3 wants 90 minutes; and a separate-ticket self-transfer with checked bags needs 3 to 4 hours. Here are the real numbers, terminal by terminal.

Quick answer: how long should a Dubai layover be?
- Emirates, both flights in Terminal 3 (one ticket): 60 to 75 minutes can work — Emirates’ minimum transit time is 60 minutes.
- Between Terminals 1 and 3 (airside, one ticket): allow about 90 minutes.
- Any change involving Terminal 2, or a tight schedule: allow 2 hours.
- Separate tickets with checked bags (self-transfer): allow 3 to 4 hours — you clear UAE immigration, reclaim your bag and check in again.
- For a stress-free connection: 2 to 3 hours is the comfortable range.
Dubai Airport (DXB) layover planning table
| Connection type at DXB | Planning minimum | More comfortable | Why the buffer changes |
|---|---|---|---|
| Emirates, both flights in Terminal 3 (through) | 60 to 75 minutes | 90 to 120 minutes | Bags checked through, airside; only a transfer security check and the concourse train. |
| Between Terminals 1 and 3 (airside, through) | 90 minutes | 2 hours | Airside train/shuttle between T1 and T3, plus transfer security. |
| Any connection involving Terminal 2 or a terminal change | 2 hours | 2.5 hours | Terminal 2 is separate; allow for the inter-terminal shuttle. |
| Separate tickets with checked bags (self-transfer) | 3 hours | 4 hours or more | You clear UAE immigration, reclaim your bag, check in again and pass security. |

DXB terminals and concourses
Dubai International has three terminals: 1, 2 and 3. Terminal 3 is the Emirates (and flydubai) hub and has three concourses — A, B and C — connected airside by an automated train that runs every 3 to 4 minutes. Terminal 1 handles many other international airlines and is joined to Terminal 3 by an airside transfer, so a T1–T3 through connection does not require immigration. Terminal 2 sits on the other side of the airport and is reached by a landside shuttle, so any connection involving Terminal 2 needs more time.
| Transfer | Typical time | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Between Terminal 3 concourses (A, B, C) | 15 to 30 minutes | Automated airside train every 3–4 minutes, plus walking to and from the platform. |
| Terminal 1 ↔ Terminal 3 (airside) | ~20 to 30 minutes | Airside transfer; 90 minutes is generally enough for a through connection. |
| Any transfer involving Terminal 2 | 20 to 45 minutes | Landside inter-terminal shuttle; not airside-connected to T1/T3. |
Do you clear immigration on a Dubai transit?
On a Dubai airport transit, the border question depends on your ticket. For a through connection on one ticket, no — you stay airside, your checked bags are transferred for you, and you only pass a transfer security check before your onward gate. That is why DXB connections can be quick. You do cross the border if you are on separate tickets (reclaim and re-check your bag) or if you leave the airport. UK passport holders can currently get a free visa on arrival to enter Dubai, and the Metro links the airport to Downtown in roughly 15 to 30 minutes.
Worked example: an Emirates connection within Terminal 3
Scenario: You land at Terminal 3 Concourse A from London at 7:00am on Emirates, connecting to another Emirates flight from Concourse B on one ticket (bags checked through).
- Off the plane and walk from the gate: ~10 min → 7:10
- Transfer security screening: ~15 min → 7:25
- Automated train A → B and walk: ~15 min → 7:40
- Walk to the gate and settle: ~10 min → 7:50
Total used: about 50 minutes on a smooth day, which is why Emirates’ 60-minute minimum can work for a Terminal 3 through connection. By contrast, a separate-ticket self-transfer that adds UAE immigration, baggage reclaim and re-check easily reaches 2 to 3 hours of process, so we suggest a 3 to 4 hour buffer for those.
What changes the answer at Dubai Airport
A few things decide how long your Dubai layover really needs to be:
- Whether both flights are in Terminal 3, or you change terminals (especially to or from Terminal 2).
- Whether it is one through ticket (airside, no immigration) or separate tickets (border, reclaim, re-check).
- The Terminal 3 concourse train and the transfer security check, which sit inside every connection.
- Peak arrival banks and whether you plan to leave the airport for the city.
Methodology and official sources
These ranges combine Emirates’ published minimum transit time and Dubai Airports’ connections guidance with the practical friction of the concourse train, transfer security, terminal changes and separate-ticket self-transfers. Your airline sets the official minimum connection time, and waits vary by time of day, so always check before you book.

FAQs
How long should a layover at Dubai Airport be?
For an Emirates through connection within Terminal 3, 60 to 75 minutes can work; between Terminals 1 and 3 allow about 90 minutes; and for a separate-ticket self-transfer allow 3 to 4 hours. Two to three hours is the comfortable range.
What is the minimum connection time at Dubai (DXB)?
Emirates’ minimum transit time at Dubai is 60 minutes, and Dubai Airport suggests 75 to 90 minutes as a general minimum for international connections. Your airline may set a longer minimum.
Is 1 hour enough to connect in Dubai?
It can be for an Emirates through connection within Terminal 3 if your inbound flight is on time, since the minimum is 60 minutes. It is not enough if you change terminals, are on separate tickets, or face any delay.
How long does it take to move between DXB terminals and concourses?
Between Terminal 3 concourses allow 15 to 30 minutes on the automated airside train. Terminals 1 and 3 are connected airside in about 20 to 30 minutes; any transfer involving Terminal 2 uses a landside shuttle and takes 20 to 45 minutes.
Should I use more time at DXB on separate tickets?
Yes. On separate tickets you must clear UAE immigration, reclaim your checked bag and check in again, so allow 3 to 4 hours rather than the 60 to 90 minute through-connection baselines.
Can I leave DXB during a layover?
Yes, with a long enough layover. UK passport holders can currently get a free visa on arrival, and the Metro reaches Downtown in about 15 to 30 minutes each way — but only attempt it if your layover comfortably absorbs the border, the city trip and a fresh security screening.
